Workhop during ‘Intelligent Terrain’ Residency
> 14 September 2024 > at Ferme Lanthorn Willow in Ottawa, Canada

︎ Workshop on making the microbial fuel cells was held during an artist residency called ‘Intelligent Terrain’. The program was curated by Junghyun Kim ︎ and UKAI projects  ︎ The residency hosted 6 artists from Korea and Canada. Workshops were held to share knowledge among the participating artists and generate discussions.

︎ Residency location was a willow farm surrounded by a beauiful forest. The land was low, so there were quite a few swamps nearby, within the forests.

︎ We started walking to the nearby pond which is called the ‘Beaver Pond’. The beavers used to live there until recently. It is a natural pond in the meadow. There at the edges we gathered a few scoops of mud, and also a few scoops at another swamp. It was interesting to get to know the ecosystem around the residence this way. The owners of the farm gave us a tour, telling us stories of the animals and plants that live there and the history of land of this area.

︎We came back to the farm with the gathered mud, and made a few mud batteries. The mugs were seconds given by a ceramic workshop hosted within the farm.

︎After about a week, the mud cells were making enough electricity. We powered a small analog sound synthesiser with the mud cells, which made sounds that resemble crickets or birdcalls. The sound would be emitted by the piezo every time there was enough charge in the capacitors.
